Cost: $24 (surveyors' estimate of the price of dinner with one drink and tip)

Known for “heaping plates” of “amazing noodles chock-full of seafood”, these “cash-only” Malaysians are just the thing when you “can’t afford a ticket to Kuala Lumpur”; despite “expressionless” service and “dumpy” decor, the “unbeatable combo” of “good and cheap” keeps regulars “streaming in.”

The restaurant had a record of our reservation. We were seated promptly at a large circular table in a spacious corner. Our server did not introduce herself or review the menu and the evening's specials. In fact, she appeared impatient when answering Kelly's question about the difference between two shrimp-based dishes. Our orders were delivered promptly, correctly and in a straightforward fashion. Most of the dishes were unexceptional and covered with too much sauce. Kelly's prawns were mealy and tough. The roti canai was fresh and flavorful. Gillis's ginger duck was a standout, rich and hearty. Jeanna's and my shaved ice desserts were tasty and refreshing. I think that it will be some time before I return to Nyonya, if at all. Other restaurants await exploration. Food+tax+tip=$20.
