Zagat Ratings & Review
“Stick-to-your-ribs” soul food “with a capital S” translates into “long waits” at this Harlem “staple” famed for its “fabulous” fried chicken, waffles and cornbread at “real-deal” prices; it may resemble a “large cafeteria”, but the vibe is more like “grandma’s kitchen in Alabama.”

I miss the soul food I had when I lived in Chicago!

Who attended?

  • 6 attendees
    •  Everytime I join this meetup, I get to engage in very interesting conversation.
    •  Like most who had the fried chicken, I wasn't really that impressed with it (should have had the jerk chicken instead), but the people who attended were friendly and the conversation was interesting. Afterwards, a few of us nearly walked the length of Manhattan Island and had an enjoyable time.
    •  Food was Ok but it was a really nice group of people. Some of us walked to Chinatown from 113th street after lunch. I had a nice day.

FOOD -Fried chicken: plump, somewhat flavorful, but not outstanding. -String beans: moist and tasty. -Mac 'n cheese: average, at best. -Jerk chicken: moist, peppery and VERY flavorful. Definitely worth having again. -Red velvet cake: tasty -Rhum cake: moist, with strong hints of the liquor. Also definitely worth having again. DECOR Spare SERVICE Perfunctory, with little friendliness or attention COST $26 for the fried chicken platter, a shared piece of the jerk chicken, and the red velvet cake I very much enjoyed the Group's discussion of dance, contemporary events in Africa, international business, Jewish deli food, the New York dining scene and Sakura's non-profit organization. I also liked our relaxing walk home through Central Park.
    •  The venue is probably resting on its laurels - seemed to be coasting on autopilot and dining out on former glories. The fried chicken was pedestrian at best. That said, the jerk chicken was pretty good. As was the rum cake. Atmosphere was only warmed by the enthusiastic, lively discussion from our group. The air conditioning was on steroids. The iced water was chilled nicely.
